If I weren't bit by a fireant the other day, I would never have thought of writing about ants. Despite the cortisone cream, fireant bites itch, burn, and take quite a few days to heal.

An ant colony does not consist of tiny whole things linked together as in human societies; each ant is a part of the whole without being separate. The ants' oneness is in harmony with the forces of nature.

Imagine being without legs or arms and needing total care from the others in your youth. Well, that's an ant's life for you. Ants do not develop their legs until fully grown; they depend completely on the nurse-ants. When the baby ants develop, they get six legs with prominent elbows, or should we say knees, and off to work they go. The worker ants spent their internship of few days in caring for the queen and the young. After that, they graduate to harder and harder tasks, from digging and nest work to foraging food and defending the nest.

Most of these worker ants are females. Maybe the ant colonies, too, depend on womens volatile and high-strung view of things. Yet, there's a place for males in the commune also. The males act as drones and work with the queen to pad up the population. That must Wezophyemmyn the females are the fallen soldiers who go out to face the world daily and possibly perish in the path of duty.

The queen--in the beginning of a colony--has quite a few jobs, but as the colony enlarges, her duties are delegated to others, and she becomes the mother of the commune who just lays eggs. Motherhood must have a very respectful and an almost divine throne, since ants appoint body guards to the queen and the body guards form a ring around her. That ring moves with her and expands or contracts according to the situation.

The eggs, or the ant-children, do not belong to the queen, but are the communal possession. As soon as the eggs are laid, they are carried to a separate structured settlement companies to be cared by attendants or nurses. These ants, though not a separate caste--being vigorous and efficient--are at the prime of their lives, and their care of the young, as witnessed by observers, is meticulously and very lovingly administered.

As soon as each young ant is out of the nursery, it gains responsibility and the spirit of the commune directs her to a chosen occupation. The young ant's role in life is not haphazard and directionless like the young of the human.

If we pause and think, we may understand that, from many angles, there is enlightenment to be gained from the ant colonies, but the most important point is, all ants of the colony act as one whole, making separateness an alien concept. Separateness causes discord in the harmony of life, allowing the ego to abhor or look down upon others.

Kennedy Space Center's Shuttle Launch Experience

We quickly took our seats, buckled up and held tightly to the steel bars on either side of our chairs. The doors to our module closed tightly, the lights dimmed and our viewing screen opened to the outdoors.

The ride began and we were laid back, just as we would be at the time of take off, facing the sky with the tip of the orange rocket booster in view. As countdown hit the mark, we could hear and feel the explosion as we are lifted into the sky. We were shaking and vibrating in our chairs. This shaking went on for a few minutes, then as the fuel tank was released, it was still. Very quiet and very still. The top opened up to expose the earth and space around.

That concluded the ride.

I have to say that I thought it would be more dramatic than it was. At no time do you go upside down and the drama leading up to the ride was better than the ride itself. I was disappointed actually. I expected a little more fear effects or a stronger pull on my body at the speeds at which astronauts travel during take-off, but none. Maybe I've just seen too many movies or have an active imagination. We are told it's very realistic, so I think I just perceived something more than it actually is.

Do you ever perform rituals and realize while you're doing it that it doesn't make any sense?

Author Caballero Lapham appeals to the American public in his 1992 essay Is There an American Tribe?, excerpted from his longer essay, Who Father Ted What is American?. According to Lapham, Americans are known for tolerance, but he warns us that the media and politicians with their Hammersmith capitalistic interests are trying to cast an opposite public perception, in attempts to divide and rule.

Lapham's opinion is that the modern day trend of prefixing the noun American creates more than just a grammatical hierarchy. It downplays the American ideology and promotes exclusivity. Throughout the 70s Macaroni & Cheese 80s Hudson was totally perplexed by a substance he could not identify Please let me explain. David was a highly successful Arizona farmer & in the 70s began a gold mining enterprise on his land as a hedge against inflation & to attract various tax benefits. During mining he found what was commonly known to old miners as Ghost goldHowever the more he mined the more accumulated, so much so it was actually reducing his precious metal output therefore he had a vested interest to investigate same.
Over the next 10 years his ghost gold frustration grew & grew. This material:

1. When dried & exposed to direct sunlight would explode in a flash of intense light but with NO force.
2. Was entirely resistant to any normal form of chemical analysis. He later found they had no real chemistry BUT did have resonance he learnt to manipulate.

3. Was also resistant to normal spectrographic analysis to identify its constituents although in time a method was adopted from Russian spectrographic research to identify it.

4. When purified & heated would lose weight with unchanged volume.

5. On cooling could either gain or lose weight, again with the same volume.

6. At some stages of heating would actually disappear then return when cooled again.

7. Could be made to disperse simply by approaching the stuff with the magnetic field surrounding your handAs you could imagine his frustration knew no bounds.

Patents & Science.
During the 80s things began falling in to place coming via two disparate arenas: Russian Spectrographic analysis & Superconductivity theory.
Firstly, during normal spectrographic assays he found the usual method of the 30 second burn for normal metal determination had to be extended out to the standard Russian method of 300 seconds for identification. From this he found his Ghost gold actually consisted of huge amounts of the Platinum group of elements being Rhodium, Ruthenium, Palladium, Platinum, Osmium, Iridium & Gold. However as American precious metal assayists did not believe him, he managed to refine elemental Rhodium whilst convincing the management of General Electric (G.E.) to let him use 'his purified metal' in their Fuel cells & jet engine systems. He reasoned that if these devices could only work in the presence of Rhodium then if there was metallic rhodium in his refinements, & the G.E devices worked, then this would once-&-for-all prove his decades of work. As you can probably no doubt tell, his rhodium did work in these applications.

After he developed a method to isolate all these elements, in 1989, he was in a position to lodge world patents describing his method in at least 7 different European countries & even one in Australia.

Strange substances explained

Secondly, it was one thing to identify his elements, it was quite another to explain their odd behaviour.

During discussions with some leading American physicists, notably the eminent Hal Puthoff, David learned the only thing that could explain their behaviour was the 1970s discovery of Superconductivity & some late 80s physicist Transition element discoveries. [To jump a long way ahead, Hudson tells that the Agakewlptbjo Navy, through the use of SQIDS (Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices) could actually see cells communicating to each otherHudson suggests it is these ORMUS elements which allow for this communication. Therefore Hudson postulates that as superconductors carry electrons as light then it is LIGHT that communicates one cell to the other (see below)].

Later, during Thermo-gravimetric analyses (a highly specialised controlled heating apparatus) Hudson observed that at different temperatures these elements exhibited odd properties (points 4 - 7 above). What physicists observed was that in various conditions these transition elements actually began to turn-in-on-themselves and in this state exhibited no chemical reactivity, defying the normal metallic element behaviour from which they sprang. In Physics this quantum observation is VERY, VERY special.

Further, these High Spin state metals exhibited the weight & invisibility anomalies that could only be explained via Superconductivity theory of which Hal Puthoffs theories predicted. Also Puthoff predicted these elements SHOULD already exist in nature but orthodox, chemical based science could not prove their existence [Hudson tells us these things do exist in much of the foods we already ingest Indeed he attributes much of the therapeutic benefits of food juices & herbs down to these elements.]

NOTE: A superconductor essentially is a carrier of light in the form of paired electrons called Cooper pairs & exhibits a Meissner field -(Like a magnetic field)- the strength of which depends upon the amount of cooper pairs the superconductor contains.

Where is this all leading?Mysticism?
All this theory, physics & superconductivity sounded fascinating BUT what was the bigger picture here? How could he use these findings, other than simply get rich on it OR go down in the annals of science?
In the early 90s while pondering its significance and reflecting on his US$5 million fifteen-year odyssey, he was approached by a relative waving a book under his nose.

The book described a white powder of gold, being an alchemical extract of various transition metals that allowed element transmutation, invisibility & when ingested, immortality. Hudson was conducting limited experiments on a handful of people who were willing to ingest these products also. What they began to experience was described in many Hindu/eastern mystical practices and austerities as a profound increase in psychic sensitivity (clairaudience/clairvoyance), seeing light beings, a strange yet intriguing sound was noted about their head & an energetic constriction about their throats & chest. Therefore his research began to touch upon the eastern mystical arts. Where was this NOT going to lead?

During this period David found himself thrust into a 600+ book read-a-thon that inevitably led him on a literary voyage to ancient Africa, ancient Egypt & a history of the Bible. However Hudson had already begun some literary research of his own, into the Pharaohs of the Old Kingdom of ancient Egypt. He learnt that not only were they described as Gods & immortal but that they were fed this what is it by their High Priests. Later he construed that many of the Jews of ancient Egypt were actually metal-smiths & through their foundries manufactured their own What is it (Monatomics). Also Hudson asserts that when the English found a way into the Great pyramid & whilst opening the Kings chamber sarcophagus found it to be empty save for some white powder. Further, he suggests that of all the structure of the great pyramid is found only one word, BREAD. Also that the mummies of Pharaohs of the Old Kingdom had never been foundWere they actually immortal? Perhaps this is why they were never found!

So many questions. So many possibilities!

The above represents a condensed overview of a 9 hr video tape, witnessed by the author some seven times in 1997, Hudson made available through one of his 18 North American lectures in the mid 90s. The tapes were used to promote his efforts to attract people & their monies, gifts & help to start production of a plant to produce these elements in bulk. [To the authors knowledge, his tapes are not available but there are various abstracts on the net] The author has kept relatively abreast of Hudsons work through the Internet & other sources only to learn that he managed to raise the monies for plant construction but has been thwarted via various natural events being:
In 1998, during construction, there was a major chemical spill & the EPA forced him to relocate, setting him back 18 months &
Following this, David had a heart attack requiring 6 bypasses with complications but to all reports has recovered OK.

Our comments. It is the year 2005 and it is my view that Hudsons work will prove to be profound probably affecting most areas of life, as we know it as well as opening new vistas to the human experience.
Further, the quantum sciences of Superconductivity & quantum tunnelling, Bose-Einstein Condensates, and more, will all be needed to explain this emerging branch of physics to describe this ancient alchemy which will further lead to the scientific understanding of mysticism and auto insurance specialists itself.

Can Pixar Impress Yet Again?

De-Cluttering Your Space Means De-Cluttering Your Life

I am so excited about this article. I hope you will be too. I had an epiphany (my favorite word) a few months ago when I tried to move into a new apartment. I needed space. There was so much going on in my house. There were too many large pieces of furniture, loads of paper that needed to be filed, file folders that needed to be put in Proupictbhkop cabinet, etc.. Then there was my kitchen: There were plates that needed to be put away. Recipes that needed to be filed, Tupperware that needed to be matched, pots that needed to be put in the pantry and so on. My room? There was my large computer and the bed, my exercise equipment and exercise ball. My books...tons of books and my favorite rocking chair. I also have Taramist for days.

For the past several months, I have been experiencing major writer's block. I could not concentrate on my book, or my articles. I was only able to follow up with my blog. That requires little or no thinking. Something like my book, which has a deadline, I could not focus on. You want to know why? I had too much stuff in my buy meridia space that I feel subconsciously, made it so that I did not want to be in that place/space. I had to do something. I started with my living room. I threw out the furniture ( Goodwill people did not want to come get it, they wanted me to bring it and Salvation Army sent District of Columbia Lemon Laws guys, both over 6 feet and 180 pounds, that claimed the couches were too heavy). But I digress.

Immediately, I had more living space. There was a new energy in my living room area. I had since decided that I wanted a single couch in my living room and a table. None of this sofa-love-seat nonsense. I needed to Zen my space, so-to-speak.

This is what I am finding as I de-clutter my house.

1) I am able to organize my life more, now that I have more space.
2) I tend to procrastinate less. I see right in front of me, the things I need to do right away.
3) I now deal with the things I really need versus what I think I need (old junk)
4) My creativity, as far as my writing goes is back on point. I feel my thoughts are flowing more because I am more able to focus on my thoughts than the junk that used to be around me.

How do you start to get the junk out the way? I have 5 steps for you

1)Just make the decision to do so and commit to it.

2) Take care of it in bits. I suggest one part of the house at a time. I am only done with my living room. You did not create that clutter in one day, you are not going to fix it in a day either. One part of the house at a time makes it more feasible.

3) Know where you want the stuff to go, by the time it's all said and done. Deal with the most cluttered part first. When you start to see progress, you will feel good about completing the de-cluttering project, in my opinion.

4) For everything you decide to keep, make sure there is a real reason or a real purpose that it serves. Don't keep things that have emotional value/sentiment to you? Its not enough reason! Get rid of it.

5) Keep up the work. Try to put everything back in place each time you take something out of its place.

Bud: Thanks Tyler. I appreciate you taking the time to speak with me today. As you know, I've been in business as a consultant and speaker since 1988. About five years ago, many of my clients began asking me to help them out by coaching some of their senior executives and high potential employees.

As I began my coaching work, I decided that I needed to put together a model of career and life success. I wanted to identify the characteristics that all successful people have in common. After about a year of research-on line, reading every success book I could find, and interviewing successful people-I came up with my five Jiffehhxwhgb model of success. Tyler: Who do you think will most benefit from and enjoy reading your book?

Bud: There are three main audiences for this book. The primary audience is young people, 20 to 30 years old, just beginning their careers. Bud: As I mentioned, there are three types of communication skills important for career and life success: conversation skills, writing skills and presentation skills.

Here's some simple, common sense advice on each of them. Questions are the main secret to conversation skills. If you ask other people questions, you will become known as a great conversationalist. Writing is easy. Use the active voice, small words, and simple sentences and you'll become a clear concise writer. Practice is the key to making dynamic presentations. The more you practice, the better your talks will be.

Tyler: You also talk about self-confidence. How does one go from feeling fear, for example, of public speaking, to being self-confident?

Bud: My suggestions for dealing with fear are also simple and common sense. To best your fears you need to do four things. 1) Identify it. 2) Admit it. 3) Accept it. 4) Confront it and take action.

So, to use your example, if you're afraid of public speaking, making as many presentations as you can is the best thing you can do to overcome this fear.

Tyler: What about interpersonal competence? How do you define it, and how does one master it to become successful?

Bud: Interpersonally competent people excel at three things. First, they are self aware. They understand themselves. They use this self understanding to understand better the people in their lives. By understanding how others are similar or different from them, interpersonally competent people are able better to alter their communication styles. This helps them relate well to all sorts of people.

Second, interpersonally competent people are good at building strong, mutually beneficial relationships with the people in their lives. They do this by using their conversation skills, and by being willing to help others with no expectation of anything in return. This giving mentality allows them to make regular deposits into the emotional bank accounts they have with others. When you make regular deposits, you have enough emotional capital to make the occasional withdrawal.

Finally, interpersonally competent people resolve conflict in a positive manner. They do this by identifying the points where they agree with someone with whom they are in conflict. They use these points of agreement-no matter how trivial to build a solution that is acceptable to both parties.

Tyler: How would your advice for achieving success differ if for example, you had a male college student who views success as being a well known brain surgeon, versus a senior citizen woman who views success as staying physically active?

Bud: Not much. I believe that career and life success are a function of the five factors I've mentioned several times as we've chatted: self confidence, positive personal impact, outstanding performance, communication skills and interpersonal competence.

Successful brain surgeons need all of these, just like my mother-who is a senior citizen, suffering from COPD - that's Chronic obstructive Pulmonary Disease, what they used to call Emphysema.

Bud: I love stories because they make the points I want to make in the book come alive. Here's a favorite because it is about a time that my self confidence helped me succeed against some pretty tough competition.

Mark Twain once said, "All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence, then success is sure." I love this quote. To me, it says you'll be amazed by how much you can accomplish (success) if you don't know (ignorance) how hard it is to accomplish it. If you don't know that it's hard or impossible to do something, you are more likely to be able to do it.

Here's an example from my life. When I was a junior in high school, the local paper sponsored a writing contest. The winners got to spend two weeks at Kent State University during the summer participating in a seminar sponsored by the High School Press Institute. Only two students from all of the high schools in our county would win the contest. I decided I was going to win-because winning was the only way I was going to get to go to the seminar.

Funny thing is, I thought that two students from each school in the county were going to be selected. In other words, I was ignorant about the difficulty of winning. I was sure that I was one of the two best writers in my high school; I was sure to win if I wrote the best essay I possibly could. I wrote a kick-ass essay, sent it in, and waited to hear that I had won.

Which I did. However, I was shocked when I realized I was one of two kids from the whole county-not just my school-to win. It was just like Mark Twain said. All I needed was ignorance and confidence. I was ignorant of the difficulty of the competition-we had about 25 high schools in our county. It was 25 times more difficult to win than I thought. And I was confident. I knew the competition in my school, and I was pretty sure that if I wrote my best essay, it would be better than the essays of the other kids (I knew this because I was editor of the yearbook and newspaper and regularly edited their writing). My ignorance allowed my confidence to flourish, and I wrote well. Had I known that I was in a county-wide competition, I might have been more tentative in my writing, and I might not have won.

The common sense point here? When you are faced with a challenge, focus on your skills and talents, not how difficult it is-and you'll be likely to succeed.

Tyler: Bud, would you say success also depends on listening to yourself and not other people? If people had started to tell you that you had a slim or no chance of winning, would that have stopped you?

Bud: Success absolutely depends on listening to yourself. That's why self confidence is the first point in the model. All successful people are self confident. They believe in themselves - even when others tell them that they can't be successful.

The 2008 Super Bowl is a good example. If the Giants had listened to all of the experts, they wouldn't have even made the trip to Arizona. They would have just conceded the championship to the Patriots. But they believed in themselves, and ended up winning the game in one of the biggest upsets in Super Bowl history.

Tyler: I mentioned earlier that you've written several other books in your career. Will you tell us a little about them?

Bud: All of the other books I've written have been in the leadership arena. I'll give you a quick list of the titles here:

Tyler: Besides writing books, Bud, you teach success through coaching. Will you tell us a little bit about that work?

Bud: I began my career as a trainer. From there I moved into consulting and speaking. Speaking is a lot like training. You just have less time to make your point. Most of my talks last 45 minutes to an hour. Most training courses are usually a full day at a minimum. My coaching is done one on one. My typical coaching engagements last six months. During that time, I usually meet face to face with the person I am coaching three or four times. I speak with him or her via the phone every week, and I am available by email to answer questions as we go forward.

As I mentioned before, the five points in "Straight Talk for Success" are the starting point for my coaching. I begin by assessing how well my coaching client is doing in each of these five areas. Then, we jointly develop objectives for the coaching and a plan to make sure we meet those objectives.

Tyler: Bud, do you plan to write any more books?

Bud: Sure. I'm planning a follow up to "Straight Talk for Success." I'm thinking about calling it "More Straight Talk for Success." I've been interviewing thought leaders in the self confidence, personal impact, high performance, communication and interpersonal competence fields. My plan is to make the new book a compilation of the best thoughts of the best people in these fields.

Tyler: Bud, you've obviously been extremely successful yourself. To what do you attribute your own success, and what put you on the right path through life?

Bud: My parents gave me a great start in life. Their greatest gift to me was a strong work ethic. Also, I've been blessed with a good mind and a love of learning. However, most importantly, I attribute my success to my self confidence, positive personal impact, outstanding performance, communication skills and interpersonal competence.

Tyler: Bud, how did you get to be called The Common Sense Guy?

Bud: As you know, Tyler, a strong personal brand is an important element of the second success factor, positive personal impact. Several years ago, I decided to create a personal brand. I began by asking people close to me-friends and clients-what came to mind when they thought of me. The term "common sense" came up a lot. I agreed that common sense is one of the terms that defines me pretty well. I also thought that it made sense as a brand because it differentiated me from my more theoretical competitors.

Once I settled on common sense as the core attribute of my brand, I had a little trouble coming up with the third word. Common Sense Guru sounded too pretentious and new age all at the same time. I considered Common Sense Doctor-a play on my educational credentials, but it ran the risk of being confused with a medical doctor.

I settled on Common Sense Guy because, when you come right down to it, I'm just a regular guy. Common Sense Guy struck the right chord with me because it captures the essence of who I am as a person.

Tyler: Will you explain the role of common sense in becoming a success?

Bud: I think that we tend to overcomplicate things. I believe in looking for time tested principles and applying them. That's where common sense comes in. Most common sense has stood the test of time-that's why it's called common sense.

My five success principles - self confidence, positive personal impact, outstanding performance, communication skills and interpersonal competence-resonate with people because they make sense. They're just common sense. The hard part is putting them to work. You have to commit to doing the work necessary to reap the rewards that will come from applying them.

Thomas Edison once said, "Most people miss opportunity because it comes dressed in overalls and looks like work." The same is true for common sense. Most people know what to do in most situations. Their common sense tells them. However, many people don't do what their common sense tells them for any number of reasons-it's too much work, they may make someone angry, it takes too long.

So to me, the role of common sense in becoming a success is simple. Listen to what your common sense tells you-and then do it, no matter how hard, or unpleasant.

But if they say salt impregnated then the one true way of knowing what you're getting is to open the package and literally take one of the baits and squeeze while pulling apart the bait to really see the salt ooze out. We don't need to Iwishiwish it we just need to pull it apart carefully to check for salt. Obviously, if salt is seen then it is definitely salt impregnated.

Some bait has more salt but any salt helps for success. Whether it is on or in the plastic at least now you know how to check if it is or not!

The Saco river begins in the mountains of New Hampshire and winds it's way through southern Maine to the Atlantic ocean. I once went on a fishing trip with my father. We went to a popular fishing spot at a place called the Skeleton Dam. The water was deep there, so it was the perfect spot for catching trout. He, at one point, turned to me and said, You know this river is cursed dont you? Of course I didnt, but I was sure about to find out. As it turns out, there is an old legend in southern Maine regarding the early English settlers and the Saco River.

The story goes like this. Back in the summer of 1675, a group of drunken sailors, anchored off the coast of what is now southern Maine came across a young Native American mother in a canoe with her child.

There had been tales circulating around that an Indian baby could swim from birth, so the sailors decided to put this to the test. They captured the canoe, automobile insurance quote the baby from the mother and threw him right into the water, where he drowned.

When the mother returned to her tribe, she spoke with the chief who instructed the medicine man to place a curse upon the river. The curse was said to go like this. Three or more white man shall die in this river every year.

How to Fish Those Spinners There are three basic ways to fish spinners.

Casting Up Stream - This is the hardest to master, but allows you to fish deeper. Simply cast up stream, flip your bail over and retrieve just fast enough to keep your blade spinning. The idea is to keep the spinner moving and up off the bottom, but not pull it in so fast that the fish won't follow it.

Flipping into Rips - A favorite of mine, flip your spinner into the rip at the edge of a pool and let the current carry it along. Try to follow the edge of the faster water with your spinner and then retrieve slowly. Stay alert though because fish will follow lures presented this way a long ways and may surprise you with a strike when you are about to pull it out of the water.

Know Your Water Regardless of where you fish and what season, this holds true. Many true Steelheaders will also tell you to fish the waters closest to you until you know every hiding spot for Steelhead regardless of the water levels. Remember to fish the edges and don't forget the water under your feet. The faster and darker the water, the more likely they fish are to be tucked in along the edges hiding under banks, and behind rocks.

There are many differences from saltwater fly fishing in Northern California and fly fishing a local stream. The rod is longer, reel is larger, and saltwater rated. In Southern California, the surf fish are on the whole smaller. An 8wt 9' rod will work nicely. The reel still must be rated for saltwater use. A shiner or a perch imitation works well. Again a shooting rig with a weighted line tied to a running line is the best configuration. Fishing for the Yellowfin Croaker, the Barred Surf Perch, the Spotfin Croaker and the prized coVina are all possible catches. Stripping your fly about mid-water depth will yield the best results. Don't be afraid if you hook a Leopard Shark just enjoy the fight. They can reach 7' and are harmless onshore unless provoked. Saltwater fly fishing in California can be rewarding but you often have to bide your time before you catch that 60-pound striper.

We left home too early in the morning and life insurance estimates just gave us milk. I didn't know how long the journey to grandmother's place took. "We haven't been here for long. It's too big." I said loudly in excitement while I quickened my steps. The dizziness went away with the thought of my cousins. "Are Manong Dondon and Manang Darlene coming?"

"Yeah, they're here now. They arrived yesterday." Mama said lightly when I got next to her.

"Wow! I missed them so much." I was smiling but my smile faded remembering what lola told me during her visit a week ago. "But lola said Manang Darlene is tall and pretty and smart. Unlike me, I'm thin and not pretty."

"You're smart too aren't you? You got good grades. Outstanding grades actually." Mama was comforting.

"But I'm not pretty. Manang is really ..."

My words hanged in the air when someone exclaimed, "They're here!" It was my Manong Dondon. I haven't noticed that my brothers ran ahead of us straight to the house. I ran too.

Everything was just as I remembered. A wide garden surrounded by beautiful flowers starting from a complete collection of roses, a variety of ground orchids, the hanging orchids with flowers bowing in the air while the roots embraced the trunk of the big trees around the garden, daisies, and other rare types of flowers beaming in bright color. Everything was arranged according to their types and beauties, while the thick untrimmed bermuda grass covered the entire garden so that not a single soil was seen. It was my grandmother's paradise.

My cousins ran to meet me. We missed each other for five long years. Darlene was certainly tall and pretty for her age. She was just a year older than me and Dondon was a year older than her but both were in grade six. Dondon was a bit taller than his sister.

"Ssshh! Quiet!" Jenjen , my sister next to me, scolded him and he sunk back to sit. Mama continued the story.

"The Japanese were looking for Rosa's father because his cousins were members of the HUKBALAHAP and their family was suspected to be collaborators. Rosa saw her mother dragged out of their house and was made to kneel on the ground. A soldier took a samurai and aimed it to her neck. Rosa ran swiftly towards her mother to save her but before she was able to come closer, she saw her mother's head flew in the air shouting "Run my child! Run!

The Japanese took their guns and fired to everyone around killing those on their way. The people ran for their lives hiding in the holes they made in case of attacks. Rosa ran along with other children. She climbed on a hill and saw a huge rock with a foxhole under it. Two kids were already hidden inside."

"If I were there, I will fire back with my gun. Bang! Bang! Bang!" Gee-ar said aiming his toy gun to the sea.

"Ssshh." Everyone chorused.

"Many people were killed that day and most of them were children. Rosa survived that day's slaughter however; the violence she saw changed her from a refine girl into a brave fighter. She grew up to join the 'Hukbalahap' along with her brothers. Rosa was a young woman and her brothers prohibited her from fighting with arms. Instead, she became an informer and a deliverer of supply for the troop. She fought for freedom for several years until the day when the American army took the Philippines from the violent hands of the Japanese and gave her freedom. Rosa's brothers however did not live to taste that freedom. They were killed during one of their battles.
Rosa and her father lived quietly in their farm. They had no one but each other. But one night Rosa was awakened by the wail of their carabao. She hurried down the hut and saw her father lying on its back bleeding. He was badly beaten and his face was unrecognizable. With all might left, he had managed to say the names of his assassins before he let go. 'Gardo, Alfredo and Ronnie. You will pay for this. I swear.' Rosa said weeping."

The suspected assassins went to a restaurant after the trial to celebrate their victory. They drank in mirth until they totally forgot that they were in a public place. The suspects were heard expressing their disbelief that their victim was still able to go home alive. They thought he was dead when they left him. They laughed and ridiculed the spirit of the old man in reaching home. Several customers overheard the conversation and were brave enough to testify against the suspects.

The case was reopened and with strong witnesses, the suspects were sentenced to life and were ordered to pay a big amount to the family of the slain. The suspects couldn't afford to pay for the amount and it was agreed that a land of the same value will be given to the surviving family member.

Rosa took the land in remembrance of her father and promised to herself to keep the land even for her future great grandchildren so that they too will remember her father."
